  • 3 Ways to change the default web browser in Windows 10

In Windows 10, the default web browser is Microsoft Edge , the latest browser developed by Microsoft. However, even if Edge brings many new features and improvements when compared to Microsoft’s previous browser – Internet Explorer – you still may want to change your default browser to another one, which you’re already accustomed to. Whether you like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Internet Explorer, Edge or any other web browser out there, setting any of them as default in Windows 10 is rather easy and, depending on the method you choose, it’s also more or less a fast process.

    NOTE:
The screenshots used in this article are from Windows 10 with Anniversary Update. Windows 10 Anniversary Update is available for free, for all Windows 10 users, as of August 2nd, 2016.

    1. Change your default browser from the Settings app in Windows 10
In order to change your default browser this way, you need to open the Settings app first. A fast way is to open the Start Menu and press the Settings icon.

Then, when the Settings app opens, press System.

Next, click or tap Default apps in the menu on the left.

Now, on the right side of the window, scroll down and look for a section called Web browser. As you’ll immediately notice, this section displays the web browser that is currently set as the default on your Windows 10 device. If you already have other web browsers installed, you can set any of them as default from here. To do that, press on your current default Web browser , which in our case is Microsoft Edge.

Windows 10 will now display a list that contains each and every web browser installed on your computer. To set any of them as default, select the one you want.

You might have noticed that the list also gives you an option called “Look for an app in the Store”. Pressing on this link launches the Store and offers you the option to download and install other web browsers. However, at least for now, these include only modern apps, and you won’t find any desktop browser here.

    2. C hange the default browser using the browser settings in Windows 10
If you didn’t already install your favorite web browser on your Windows 10, you’ll first have to download and install it. During the installation process, or immediately afterwards, most browsers will ask you if you want to set them as defaults. Let’s take for example Google Chrome which will prompt you every time you open it, to set it as a default browser.

Also, if this prompt doesn’t appear, all the browsers have this option in their settings.

When pressing these buttons, Windows 10 will launch the Settings app and take you to the same Default apps window we’ve talked about in the previous version of this article.
In there, follow the same steps we’ve previously shown you and you’ll set your new web browser as default in no time.

    3. Change the default browser from the Control Panel in Windows 10
If you’d rather use the traditional Control Panel to set your default web browser in Windows 10, you can also do that. First, launch the Control Panel. There are many ways to do it, but a fast way is to type “control panel” in Cortana’ s search field and select the appropriate result.

Once you’ve launched the Control Panel, go to “ Programs -> Default Programs” and then press “Set your default programs”.

Now, in the Programs list, scroll down and look for your favourite browser and select it by pressing it.

On the right side of the window, you can see a brief description of the browser you’ve selected and also two options: “Set this program as default” and “Choose defaults for this program”. Obviously, to set this web browser as your default, click or tap on “Set this program as default”.

Then, for Windows 10 to remember your preference, click or tap on OK and you’re done: you have a new default web browser.
